Very Strict Criteria Apply To Halal Certified Meals

By Frank Allen

The Muslim religion does not consist of religious practices apart from their everyday lives. Everything that they do is connected with their religion. They follow the rules contained in the Islamic Law, which covers even the most mundane aspects of daily life. There are many rules pertaining to the food that Muslims eat. Food is important to Muslims because it is much more than mere nutrition. It also has an impact on their spirits and their morals. They will therefore eat only Halal certified meals.

Anyone who wishes to sell Halaal products must apply to the Halaal council for certification. The council by no means rubber stamp applications easily. They conduct a thorough inspection of the processes and facilities utilized by the applicant and they make sure that every rule is followed meticulously. Certification is granted for one year only, after which an application must be made for renewal.

The Islamic Law is very specific about food that is Haram, unlawful. Pork in any form is strictly forbidden. Blood and all its by products are also prohibited. Muslims may also not eat meat from any animal that died by itself because such meat is considered as carrion. No Muslim may consume alcohol at any time, even if it is an ingredient of prescribed medication.

It is not just the food itself and the ingredients that are strictly controlled but also the process whereby the food is prepared. Halaal food must be prepared with kitchenware and utensils that are used for no other purpose. These utensils and kitchenware must be cleaned and even stored separately. In addition, Halaal food may never come into contact with haram food. If this happens the food must be discarded.

There is no rule that only Muslims may apply for Halaal certification. Anyone that can follow the regulations may apply. It is not even necessary to manufacture or prepare Halaal food only, as long as there is no cross contamination. While it is not a strict condition for certification, employing at least two Muslims to oversee processes is encouraged by Halaal councils.

There are many people not of the Muslim faith that also prefer Halaal food. They believe that this food is healthier because it is prepared under such strict hygienic conditions. Ordinary food is not always prepared in strictly controlled environments. In addition, only the very best ingredients are used. They believe that Halaal food is not just healthier but also much more tasty and flavorful.

There is a lot of money to be made with Halaal food and unfortunately there are those that try to pass off their products as Halaal while it is not the case. Consumers must check for the official Halaal logo on the packaging when they buy food. The Halaal council also maintains a website that lists everyone that legitimately supply or prepare Halaal products. Dealers must also display their certification.

Many people still think that the preparation of Halaal food is accompanies by religious rituals. This is certainly not the case. Halaal food is nothing more than food that has been prepared according to very strict rules. It is healthy and tasty.
